Conversion Rates and your DA account

[For those who want their DA accounts to grow a lot :3]

In business there´s a method of measure called conversion rates. Those essentially mean "how many customers that look at your article/service decide to buy/use it".
For example:
100 visitors and 3 people buy your wares = 3% conversion rate
(3% were converted to the dark side ^^)

Depending on what that rate is you can see if your business is doing well or not :3

Why should you care about all that?

Now on Deviantart this method can be applied as well. With pageviews (PV) and watchers (W).
(Buying/Liking the product = Watching you)

For example:
If you got 1000 PV last month and gained 50 new real W, then your conversion rate (CR) is 5% (50PV/1000W).

If your CR isn´t high enough you can deduce that you need to change something on your DA page or gallery to make it more appealing.

So what is a good Conversion Rate?

In business CRs are called good if your business generates enough profit at the current CR rate. Depending on what kind of business it is the minimal and optimal CRs change.

Someone who sells real estate and has a 10% conversion rate is a pretty good sales man (women). It means that he would sell a few houses for 200 000$ each month. (3-4 people looking at his wares/day)
A 30% real estate sales monster would be the richest man on earth~ (Not really. But you get the point. He´d have quite the fancy car :3)

On the other hand: If you´ve got a candy store and a 5% conversion rate you can close the shop ^^"
500 visitors a day and 25 buy some candy = ~50$ profit/day
For Candy stores 10-30% is the minimal CR.

Now how about DAs
Conversion Rates?

Of course there is no available research on this (besides my own). So I´ll share what I´ve found out:

First take a look at the current top watcher and pageview members: (click on it for large view)
Screenshot 1 by Kaimimi

As you can see many users with lots of pageviews are also in the "most watchers" list.
But take a look at these users:
Humon  30 Million PVs / 134 000 W = CR 0.0046 / 0.4%
Nebezial 10.2 Million PVs / 145 000 W = CR 0.0142 / 1.4%
Sakimichan 19.3 Million PVs / 360 000 W = CR 0.0186 / 1.8%
Yuumei  15.3 Million PVs / 293 000 W = CR 0.0191 / 1.9%

Now looking at this the best/most efficient artist is Yuumei.
And even though Sakimichan rates above her in terms of watchers she´s only above Yuumei because of her higher pageviews.
(Which shows that increasing your PVs is just as important as increasing your CR~)

And Humon who is at rank 7 of most watchers actually has a quite bad CR rate. Worse than the average artist on DA.
(He gained that amount of watchers trough insane page traffic too.)

Now some CRs of people that are still in the realm of normal people. (Less than 80 000 Watchers)
But who I think are awesome artists~

:iconedtropolis: 580 000 PVs / 7000 W = CR 0.0120 / 1.2%
:iconkatusnso4: 3800 PVs / 81 W = CR 0.0213 / 2.1%
:iconmoonshen: 125 000 PVs / 4270 W = CR 0.0341 / 3.4%
:iconayyasap: 232 000 PVs / 9730 W = CR 0.0419 / 4.1%
:iconwhistlinfrog: 66 000 PVs / 2860 W = CR 0.0433 / 4.3%
:iconmaximko: 26 000 PVs / 1240 W = CR 0.0476 / 4.7%
:iconobserverz: 116 000 PVs / 6960 W= CR 0.0600 / 6%

Now you can see there´s a clear discrepancy between the major DA gods and us mortal humans in term of CR.
OUR CRs are better =)

This is because as you get above 100 000 W most of the PVs are repeat visitors and few are new ones. You´ve essentially gained all the support in your particular fan group. (For example Furry-fans)
Also there is the maximum limit of 450 000 Watchers on DA that will probably never be broken.

~So according to this a good CR for mortal peoples on Deviantart is 2.5-5%~

Bad CR: 0-1%
Mediocre CR: 1-2.5%
Good CR: 2.5-5%
Very Good CR: 5-8%
God CR: 8-10%

This shows you how important a good CR is. If you calculate your own CR (W/PV) you can easily see where your account will be 1 year from now.

How do you use this for your own account?

For example my own CR is:

Kaimimi 150 W/ 9800 PV = 0.0153 / 1.5%

Which means my account is doing moderately well.

Now my average PVs are 70 PV/day with advertisement.
(DAhub, Adcast, features, social interaction)

And 30PV/day without advertisement.

Please note that calculating your current CR like described in the PS part is also recommended. If your performance has changed, your current CR might be higher or lower than your overall CR. My Current CR for this month (August 2015) is ~3,1% while my overall CR is 1.5%.
For some people the current CR and overall CR is pretty much the same though - if their performance was constant over time.
If you calculate your CR for the last 3 months you´ll probably have a more accurate representation when calculating your future growth!

But for the sake of this journal I´ll go on with the overall CR.

Now let´s calculate:

If I go on like this in 1 years I will be at:

Without advertisement:

(30 PVs * 365 Days * 1 year * 0.0153 CR) + 150 current Watcher
= 317 Watcher (211% increase)

With advertisement: (Costs 15$/month)
(70 PVs * 365 Days * 1 year * 0.0153 CR) + 150 current Watcher
= 541 Watcher (360% increase)

One year from now on is July 2016.
My goal is to be at 4000 Watchers by then.

Now that I know my goal and my current rate I see that I either need to increase my CR or my pageviews in order to achieve my goal of 4000.

So once you calculate your own CR and set your goal you can see if you need to improve!

Simple CR/PV improvement methods:

- Upload more good stuff (Ideally 2 uploads a week)
- Upload at the right times (USA time zone: 7-8PM)
- Use groups and add your stuff
- DESIGN YOUR PROFILE! (Very important for CR increase!)
- Use colors in your pictures
- Buy advertisement
- Be active, comment and WRITE CRITIQUES
- Do features and art trades
- Do live streams
- Use multiple websites to create cross-traffic (Da, tumblr...)
- Join an art team and create stuff together
- Improve your skills
...and lots and lots more methods

Use this for yourself to achieve your dream =)

Have a nice day being silly,
Kai

Ps:
Please note that there is a difference between real and fake watchers.

Fake watchers:
Watchers who watch you because they get something for it. Points or Rewatches are the most common rewards. Don´t try to get those :3

Real watchers:
Watchers who care about you and your art and watch you to either learn from you, enjoy your art or support you.
These are the ones everyone loves :3

So don´t pay points for watchers to increase your CR rate =)
Advertisement should always be about publicity. Never about reward.

And if you´ve had an inactive period on DA only calculate your CR from the PV count and W growth of your new active period. You do that by looking at your average PVs the last weeks and multiplying them by your active days. Then look at the amount of watchers you´ve gained in only your new active period using the watcher widget. Use those two values to calculate your CR.
Otherwise your CR will be lowered because you consider the PVs when your DA account was "dead" to be part of your average. Now that your account is active again your current CR is much higher though.
